Louisiana

Immerse yourself in our rich history and vibrant culture, from the Louisiana Civil Rights Trail and scenic state parks to diverse museums and outdoor adventures. Experience the state's unique music, savor local flavors on the Culinary Trail and explore endless attractions like biking, fishing and local libations.

When you make a list of all the unique things Louisiana has to offer visitors, you quickly see the long-lasting influences of our French, Spanish and African ancestry. Our past is well-preserved in our architecture, music, food and lifestyles—which include our amazing festivalsand of course in our museums of history and fine arts.

It is not an accident that Louisiana clings to the phrase "Laissez les bons temps rouler," meaning "Let the good times roll". Let yourself get lost in the traditions passed down through generations. Come visit us during Mardi Gras when costumed riders parade and magnificent balls are thrown from New Orleans and Baton Rouge to Houma, Lafayette, Lake Charles, Shreveport and beyond. Peek back across the centuries, as you walk under lavish ironwork and through the lush courtyard gardens of a meticulous French Quarter hotel. Touch history with a tour of a plantation where the daily activities of the past are recreated. Let nature's mysteries inspire and awe you via a boat tour through a cypress studded bayou.

Here, in Louisiana, history and lore don't merely live in books on a shelf; they're reflected in our everyday lives.

Discover what Louisiana has to offer:

Louisiana's Native American History

As a result of early European exploration, some communities in Louisiana are among the oldest in the United States. What truly defines our culture, though, are the legacies left by the Choctaw and Chitimacha tribes that populated the region. An excellent place to learn about the state's Native American cultures? The expansive Poverty Point World Heritage Site, one of 26 UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the United States.

Louisiana's Food History

From warming Cajun and Creole dishes to the timeless New Orleans classics like beignets, our food commemorates heritages and traditions from across the globe. Consider West Africa's influence on jambalaya, a hearty dish not unlike Senegalese jollof rice. Then there's France: The backbone of our cooking, which we call the Holy Trinity (which is, in itself, a nod to the religious culture of the state), is simply a French mirepoix. Natchitoches, Louisiana's famous meat pies were influenced by Spanish empanadas, and the olive-laden New Orleans muffaletta was the genius of Italian immigrants.
